Abstract

During the decade from 1960 to 1980, Brazil suffered abuse with authoritarianism and the harsh rules of the Brazilian military regime, responsible for the great scars that permeate the victims until today, and that appears in the literature as a criticism of censorship and repression established in that period. The present work had as general objective an analysis of the short story “Memories of the big house”, by Bernardo Kucinski, which brings in its narrative structure the memory and the traumas of some characters about the military dictatorship. The use of a subjective language, the choice of a theme described and exposed subliminally, although it does not shock the reader in a first reading considered at the time less “politically engaged” than narratives that opt for a more realistic view of State violence, in this work, has a surprising effect. It is an approach that tries to explain events that occurred at the time. It is a fact that this moment within the national history, brought with its various feelings and social criticism and that is why this theme is justified.
