Abstract

The novel Silêncio na Cidade, by Roberto Seabra, published in 2017, portrays a barbaric crime that occurred in Brasilia in the 1970s. The certainty of impunity – a striking theme in the narrative – moves those in power, silencing Justice, press and police – instruments of collective service and/or protection that, submissive or subjugated, have no choice but to succumb to the base desires of a legatee elite of barbarism and chaos. The main goal of this work is to understand how memory helps in the re-existence of the protagonist-character, as well as realizing the final literary manuscript as a symbol which resists the hardships of dark times.
