Abstract

The sounds /θ/, /ð/, and [ɫ] are challenging for Brazilian English learners, who often substitute them by unmarked segments. With the aim of revising the proficiency bands used to assess pronunciation in the Proficiency Examination for Foreign Language Teachers (EPPLE), we analysed the production of these sounds in 53 oral production samples of (future) English teachers. The production of the sounds was variable across all proficiency levels, but corresponding to native variants of the language. However, since production according to the standards emerged as a proficiency marker, we developed a specific descriptor for these sounds, separate from segmental variations.
