Abstract

This article aims to analyze some premises about socio-spatial development in Marcelo Lopes de Souza and the right to the city in Henri Lefebvre. The analysis develops mainly from the literature review of contributions by Souza (2006a; 2006b; 2012; 2013) and Lefebvre (1969; 1991; 1999). Thus, we identify alternatives and possibilities in the theoretical-methodological scope, but also political and practical to understand the dialectic of the city. In this sense, we perceive some similarities in the political and ideological stance of the present authors with regard to the understanding of the conflicts and contradictions present in the city. These similarities in analyzing the urban totality can be summed up, in a very general way, in the radical criticism: to the State; technocratic positivism; urban planning and management; the bureaucratic society of directed consumption; heteronomic society; the functionalization of urban space and the capitalist development model, etc. However, when analyzing the urban totality, the authors see a power in waste, that is, in social movements and individual and collective autonomy, as essential components of the struggle for urban reform, therefore, this reform would have as its main objective the improvement of quality of life and the increase of social justice, as well as the materialization of the right to the city. Finally, the reflection developed here supported the analysis of the effectiveness of the Participative Master Plan as an instrument of Urban Planning and Management in the Municipality of Oriximiná-Pará in the period 2006-2014.
