ESSAY ON THE CITY

CONCEPT, DEFINITION, HIERARCHY AND SPATIAL PRODUCTION

Abstract

The present work is an essay about the city, elaborated through bibliographic review, bringing reverberantions about the concept, definition, hierarchy and spatial production, aiming to contribute with the geographic science in the scope of urban geography, as these discussions are consolidated as one of the main approaches of geography. In this way, the discussion about the formation of cities, of urban centres, gives u room to approach, among others, their concept, the thresholds that can help to difine them as such, and also to differentiate them from other human agglomerations, allowing to add adjectives that are directly linked to the level of hierarchy in the urban network and/or to their dynamism. For this, the main objective of this work is to raise reverberations on the city in the scope of concept, definition, hierarchy and spatial production. The specific ones unfold in contextualizing the use of the term city and urban in contemporaneity; point out the old and new hirarchies that distinguish them from each other, facing its movement, as an object, being possessed of diverse dynamismo and complexity and; highlight the city as an object of difficult apprehension by the production agents themselves, while constituents of this same city, facing the geographical forms that compose it.
