Abstract

This work presents a critical review of the documentary "Pro dia nascer feliz" directed by João Jardim in 2007, which addresses the inequality in Brazilian education. The film portrays schools in precarious conditions in the Northeast (Pernambuco) and Southeast (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) regions, contrasting with a private school in São Paulo. The documentary highlights school dropout rates as a serious problem in the Brazilian education system, with only 41% of children completing elementary education. The film aims to question the quality of education provided and whether students have democratic access to this system. The documentary exposes the lack of resources and motivation among students in public schools, as well as the violence and shortage of teachers. On the other hand, it depicts a private school with good physical infrastructure and well-dressed, well-nourished students. The contrast between the realities of public and private schools reveals social inequality in the education system. The film concludes with accounts of violence in schools and emphasizes the crucial role of teachers as agents of transformation, capable of providing critical and emancipatory education. It underscores the importance of valuing the teaching profession and seeking improvements in the education system to promote a more humane and civic education for students.
