Abstract

Urban demographic growth in the Southwest Maranhense Metropolitan Region (RMSM) has spurred notable changes. Agriculture, particularly pasture and soybean cultivation, has significantly expanded, leading to substantial forest depletion. This degradation, driven by fires and unsustainable logging, impacts critical ecosystems like the Cerrado and Amazon. The MapBiomas Project highlights this growth, especially in municipalities such as Açailândia, Amarante do Maranhão, and João Lisboa. Using the Google Earth Engine platform, we defined the study area, selected relevant years, and analyzed data in QGIS 3.28.7 and Excel 2023. This expansion has resulted in significant environmental impacts, notably forest loss. Therefore, urgent sustainable policies and conservation measures are needed to balance economic development with environmental preservation for a resilient and sustainable future in the region.
