Resumen

This article sought to reflect understanding the expressions and meanings of the economic centrality played by the retail trade of the Imperatriz city. We chose as a spatial clipping, the Calçadão that is a traditional area of this segment, since it concentrates the largest number of establishments connected to the retail sector. We sought to reflect on the historical aspects of the Brazilian urbanization and its unfolding in the Amazonian region by contextualizing some elements of the process of urbanization of Imperatriz. We sought to relate the forms of commerce found in the Calçadão with the formation of centrality conducted by the tertiary sector, its characterize their regional importance due to the large number of people coming from other surrounding municipalities and even other states, as is it the case of the Southeast regions of the Pará state and the extreme north of the state of Tocantins, which come in search of products linked to the clothig segment. As methodological strategies, the options adopted for the development of this study were based on the qualitative approach and on the use of the dialectical method, since we understand that the city presents itself as a dynamic space that is constructed by different subjects that present different Interests. We also made the use of the interviews technique. These instruments were supported by the methodological contributions provided by Gil (2010) and Lakatos & Marconi (2003).
