Abstract

Objective: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the impact of a 12-week functional training program on physical fitness and anthropometric measures in individuals with schizophrenia. Methods: Eleven community-dwelling individuals with schizophrenia (♂ = 9; ♀ = 2) were divided into an experimental group (n = 6, M = 39 ± 2 years) and a control group (n = 5, M = 43 ± 3 years). The experimental group was submitted to a functional training program, with bi-weekly frequency. The participants performed a battery of evaluations of anthropometric (weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, waist-hip ratio e percent body fat) and physical fitness measures (EuroFit) at baseline to after 12 weeks of intervention. Results: The attendance rate to the programme was higher than 70%. Significant improvements were observed in waist (p = 0.02) and hip circumferences (p = 0.05), percent body fat (p ≤   0.01), body balance (p =  0.01) and abdominal muscle endurance (p  = 0. 03) and speed of limb movement (p   = 0.01). Conclusion: Despite the small sample size, it was found that a regular physical exercise programme has a positive impact on anthropometric measures and physical fitness in individuals with schizophrenia. Future studies should explore this topic, offering more exercise and investigating the benefits, since it is urgent to develop strategies and programmes to improve the health levels of individuals with mental disorders.
