Background: Dietary quality and mental health directly affect sports performance. However, the relationship of psychological aspects and diet quality with the physical performance of soccer players is still poorly studied. This study aims to identify the quality of the dietary habits of professional soccer players and their relationship with mental health and physical performance. Methods: Twenty-seven male professional soccer athletes participated. Mental health was assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Anxiety and Depression Scale (DASS), the quality of the dietary habits was assessed
using tests included in national dietary guidelines, and physical performance data were collected through a soccer-specific GPS system. Results: Mental health was correlated with the quality of dietary habits, but these parameters did not correlate with physical performance parameters. Mental health questionnaires scores were significantly different when athletes were divided into two groups, in accordance with their dietary habit quality. Athletes consumed few fruits, cereals, vegetables, and greens, whilst consuming high amounts of meat and eggs. Conclusions: Since players’ dietary habits are against recommendations required by the sport, these findings reinforce the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, considering the complexity of performance determinants in soccer.
