Abstract

The present study examines resultative constructions with ATÉ in Brazilian Portuguese, exemplified by [transitive clause [até ficar + adjective]], as in “Ele cozinhou o arroz até ficar soltinho” (“He cooked the rice until it became fluffy”). Grounded in Usage-Based Construction Grammar, the research investigates the role of ATÉ as a resultativity operator, promoting the interpretation of a final state achieved. Analysis of data extracted from Sketch Engine demonstrates that ATÉ grammaticalizes the focus on resultativity, distinguishing these constructions from others that express state changes. The findings highlight ATÉ as a central element in encoding resultant states in Brazilian Portuguese.

Hanna Ferreira, Fluminense Federal University

Currently, I am a Substitute Professor of English Language at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and I am also a PhD student with a scholarship in Language Studies at the same institution. I completed my master's degree in the same area and institution, and I have a postgraduate degree in Portuguese Language for Foreigners from UFF. Additionally, I hold a postgraduate degree in Pedagogical Neuroscience from Candido Mendes University. I have two bachelor's degrees from UFF: one in Letters with qualifications in Portuguese and English, and another in Portuguese and French.
