Abstract

This paper discusses about the persistence of the stigmatization of the illiterate in literate society in the 21st century. It aims at analyzing how non-literate individuals are classified in society in an attempt to demystify the conception of the illiterate as being "incapable" or "inferior", because they do not have mastery of the technology of writing. The emergence of the concept of literacy contributed to minimize the social impact of writing in the face of illiteracy studies, however, prejudice against the illiterate still persists and is now even more widespread in social networks.
