Abstract

Learning a foreign language, the learner often seeks to understand a text by translating and interpreting word by word. This positioning hinders the development of learning, because in relation to the English language there are so-called false cognates that confuse the apprentice in the clarity of the text studied. Thus, the research came up with studies and discussions about the lexicon in the discipline Lexicografia offered by the Graduate Program in Teaching Language and Literature-UFT. In this way, we intend from this context to analyze and compare how the record of false cognates occurs in the Oxford (2009) and Longman (2008) dictionaries. For the theoretical referential we use historical course on Lexicology and Lexicography, Lexicography of the English language, considerations on bilingual dictionaries and a brief approach on false cognates.
