Abstract

This essay discusses the importance of field work for the formation of teachers in Geography. This is an activity developed as part of the training in geography with undergraduate students at the Federal University of Northern Tocantins. The main focus was a regional study and sought in the knowledge framework of the Geography of the Amazon, to create debates about the main regional city of the Amazon, Belém, observing the functioning of the places as a place of experience and perception and as the main centrality of the economic dynamics of the Amazon. This is not an analysis of the geography of Belém, just the importance of the field in the formation of the geographer. One way to carry out the study was through a field activity scheduled for four days. The main method applied was guided observation in museums, churches and historical centres, always seeking to distance the field from a tour, conceptually applying elements of geography for the observation of monuments, material and immaterial works. We also applied in the field the construction of the notion of place, between smell, colors, chaos and organization, activities developed in the Ver-o-Peso market. What is portrayed in this essay is a reflection of the students' field experience.
