The Impacts of Climate Change on Agribusiness Production Chains in Goiás

Abstract

In Goiás, the agribusiness sector accounts for a significant portion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), particularly in the export of agricultural commodities such as soybeans, corn, and sugarcane, along with their derivatives. In recent years, the sector has expanded its land use in the Cerrado biome, raising concerns about the impacts on local ecosystems. These impacts, in turn, contribute to climate change and can alter the productivity of agricultural production chains. The general objective of this research was to analyze the impact of climate change on agribusiness production chains in Goiás, using secondary data collected through an integrative literature review. This is a qualitative, basic research study with a descriptive objective, developed through a literature review. The results demonstrated a growing expected potential for agribusiness activities in Goiás, especially in the export sector. However, the expansion of land use has become an urgent issue on the environmental agenda. There is evidence that practices such as deforestation, burning, the use of agrochemicals, and other activities drastically impact the Cerrado biome, in addition to contributing to the exacerbation of local climate change. Consequently, these climatic changes negatively influence the state's agricultural production chains, potentially leading to a loss of economic potential. It was found that the state of Goiás has developed some measures, such as Ecological-Economic Zoning (EEZ), the Multi-Year Plan (PPA), and the Agro Tax. Given the complexity and urgency of the issue, the research concludes by highlighting the need for integration of the actions adopted by the state and its municipalities, in conjunction with producers.
