Abstract

The research was carried out as part of the activities developed in the discipline of Cartography II of the Geography of Araguaína - UFT course. The objective was the spatial and socioeconomic characterization of micro-regions, through the cartographic base existing in Tocantins. The lack of teaching materials divided by micro-regions was identified to work on the cartographic characterization of the Tocantins territory. For realization, it was divided into eight groups to characterize the micro-regions and preparation of didactic booklets to be used in basic education. Some data were collected, such as: political division, environmental and natural knowledge, population, economy, energy resources, social inequality, history, culture and tourism. Analyzing the collected data, great economic, cultural and geographic variations were observed, the differences between the cities spatialized from the physical to the socioeconomic aspects, where areas had a great population and economic growth in a very short time and others kept the level of development stagnant. The eight micro-regions comprise 139 municipalities with a population of 1,383,453 inhabitants and an area of 277,621,858 km². It resulted in eight didactic booklets for students in the second cycle of elementary education to be used in internships and in the training of future teachers who worked in public schools in the basic education network.
