With population growth and the accelerated process of disordered urbanization, land occupation in unsuitable areas has been a common practice in Brazilian cities, generating problems both at an environmental and social level. This article aims to discuss and analyze the effects of disorderly land occupation on the banks of Córrego Neblina in Araguaína-TO. It was found that the lack of urban planning and infrastructure to meet the municipality's population demand contributes to aggravate problems encountered such as flooding and land degradation. The importance and need for environmental awareness on the part of the population are highlighted, as well as the contribution of the public authorities in implementing what is provided for in the law that guides the use and occupation of land.
