Correlation among walking, anthropometric parameters and fatigue in dialysis patients from a city in the interior of Rondônia

Introduction: Due to the degree of complication of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), there is guidance for starting the hemodialysis process. Although there is sufficient evidence on the benefits of physical activity in dialysis patients, it is known that there are barriers to adherence, such as frailty, fatigue, presence of comorbidities and low motivation. Objective: to analyze possible correlations between weekly walking time, fatigue and anthropometric parameters among themselves in the dialysis population, as well as to evaluate risk and protective parameters for these. Methods: The sample consisted of 45 patients of both genders aged between 26 and 78 years and with more than three months of dialysis. Walking time was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-short version). Fatigue was measured using the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS). Body mass and height were measured using a Welmy scale and stadiometer (W-110H), waist, hip, calf and abdomen perimeters were measured using a Sanny anthropometric tape, in order to calculate the waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist ratio -height (WHtR) and body mass index (BMI). The Shapiro-Wilk test was used for data normality and Spearman correlation. The significance level was p ≤ 0.05. Results: the sample consisted mostly of men (31), with an average age of 47.55 (± 13.9) years old. Most of the volunteers presented cardiovascular risk factors through the abdomen perimetry indices (52.27%), WHR (55.5%) and WHtR (64.4%) and presented calf perimetry (46.66%) below the reference values. The BMI showed a prevalence of overweight and obesity in 44.44% of the volunteers, only one classified below 20 kg/m2. The walking time had a median of 60 minutes (weekly) and the fatigue score was 2. There was a significant, weak and negative correlation between the walking time and the fatigue score (r: -0.296 and p: 0.049), and these showed no significant correlations with anthropometric parameters. Conclusion: Walking time can be compromised with fatigue in the studied population and a large part of the sample presented risks related to anthropometric parameters.
