Body image in school Physical Education A systematic literature review (2016–2026)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to identify and analyze, through a systematic review, scientific studies on body image (BI) in school Physical Education (PE), considering the perceptions of students and teachers and the pedagogical practices developed in classes. The search was conducted in the CAPES Periodicals Portal in March 2026, covering 2016 to 2026 and combining Portuguese-language descriptors with the Boolean operator AND, following the PRISMA 2020 statement. Peer-reviewed studies investigating BI in school PE, involving students, teachers, and/or pedagogical practices, were included; studies outside the period or not addressing the phenomenon in this context were excluded. Of the 106 records identified, five studies composed the final sample, organized into three thematic categories: body image and pedagogical practice; body image and students' perception; and body image in the context of teaching practice. Quantitative designs focused on the prevalence of body dissatisfaction and distortion among students and teachers predominated. Scientific production on BI in school PE remains scarce and concentrated on describing prevalence, revealing gaps regarding intentional pedagogical strategies aimed at building a positive body image in everyday school life.
