This article analyses how Gabriel García Márquez’s chronicle Yo visité Hungría, included in Obra periodística 3. De Europa y América (1955-1960) (2015), constructs a minimal grammar of hardship through a reduced repertoire of recurrent lexical combinations and the interactional metadiscourse of self-mention. Based on an intensive case study with a quantitative–qualitative lexicological methodology supported by Voyant Tools, it describes the patterns that articulate spatial closure, political surveillance and everyday scarcity. It concludes that these recurrences condense the socialist experience of penury and make it possible to compare the author’s European cycle.
