Resumen

Two assumptions related to the understanding of the final examination and to the Professional Master (PM) in Letters (Profletras) goals are questioned in this article. The first one refers to the possibilities of a certain conception of applied research being an appropriate means for achieving the objectives of this postgraduate studies mode. The second one, which expresses a certain current consensus in the academic context, refers to the understanding that its primary objective would be to form the so-called teacher researcher. Regarding the methodology, data from documentary research, which enabled us to identify the legal aspects related to the Master Professional (MP) Courses and to the Profletras, were confronted with data from the bibliographic research, through which the main teacher training models were mapped. The analyses show that the technical perspective, training model which bind the conception of applied research that guides the legal basis of the PM and the conception of teacher-researcher, presents impracticable limitations on the purpose of promoting the professional development of Portuguese teachers as proposed by the Profletras.
