This essay presents theoretical considerations on the discipline of the History of Geographical Thought (HGT) in undergraduate education, its broader contextualization, and its importance for the training of graduates in the field. The writing is based on the author's teaching practice and his concerns to assign an ethical status to the subject, so that the HGT encompasses content that makes sense in understanding that what we need is a society oriented towards peace, where human beings respect and value each other mutually. The author proposes that geographical space is a reflection of the human saga to escape Death. On one hand, he notes that the escape from Death has been occurring in a contradictory manner, considering that we still live in a world marked by violence and wars. On the other hand, the author argues that Death, as a democratic fear, could be the main reason why the history of people, and consequently of geographical thought, might be a hallmark of the ethical elevation of humanity.
