Abstract

The present work is the result of a field class in the discipline “Geography of Population” of the undergraduate course in Geography at the Federal University of Tocantins/UFT, Campus Universitário de Araguaína. In this article, we develop a discussion about the current Brazilian energy policy and its deterritorializing power. That said, we have as a case study the deterritorialization of the population that lived on Ilha de São José, municipality Babaçulândia-TO which, as a result of the construction of the Estreito Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE), was forced to reterritorialize itself (part of the population ) in the Mirindiba resettlement located in the municipality of Araguaína-TO. We brought to the discussion concepts intrinsically linked to the case study, such as the concepts of territory, de-re-territorialization and traditional communities/populations. This article aims to highlight the social benefits generated from the construction of the Estreito Hydroelectric Power Plant/UHE, such as the deterritorialization and loss of identity and rootedness of the population of Ilha de São José that currently lives in the Mirindiba resettlement.
