The article is a discussion over the controversies about the Belém-Brasilia highway in the state of Tocantins. The first refers to uncertainties about which federal highway built in the state corresponds to Belem-Brasilia. Second, the expansion of this highway as an inducer of Tocantins socio-spatial transformations ispolemicized. In this debate it is stated that the Tocantins to the pioneer route Belem-Brasilia inaugurated in 1960 corresponds to BR-153. It is also shown that the highway is part of a set of strategies promoted by the federal government for Amazon insertion in the process of capitalist expansion since the second half of the twentieth century. The methodology consists of literature review and consultation of maps available on the website of the Departamento Nacional de Infraestrutura de Transportes (DENIT).References
