ABSTRACT. Over time, education in Brazil has undergone advances and innovations; however, some areas still face difficulties in meeting the needs of the Brazilian population. This is the case of Youth and Adult Education, whose defense and continuity depend largely on the work of a few education professionals. This study focuses on an even more critical instance: the literacy of young people and adults in rural areas of Brazil, considering the transformative power of literacy in the lives of these subjects. The general objective of this study is to analyze literacy and illiteracy rates in Youth and Adult Education in rural Brazil and to map previous studies conducted on the subject. Data were mainly collected from virtual repositories based on the Demographic Census, the National Household Sample Survey, and the National Education Plan Indicator Panel. The data show that in some Brazilian regions, up to 50% of the rural population is illiterate. In the southern region, the data do not show such a large discrepancy between urban and rural literacy rates; however, there is still a need for attention and action so that illiteracy can be overcome.
