ABSTRACT. This article involves a theoretical deepening of a master’s dissertation that investigates the constitution of the rural subject and the singularities of Rural Education from a Post-Structuralist perspective. The main objective of the study is to demonstrate how Rural Education is marked by imperatives in the constitution of subjects, through the lens of Michel Foucault’s concept of Technologies of the Self. The discursive analysis is based on an empirical field that articulates Foucault’s The Hermeneutics of the Subject (2006) with Catão’s (2016), which describes the dynamics of archaic agriculture (1st and 2nd centuries BCE), in order to reflect on the Rural Education that shapes contemporaneity. Theoretically, the article draws on the works of Roseli Caldart and Gaudêncio Frigotto to contextualize the “in/of the countryside” binomial, highlighting Rural Education as a social movement of struggle and resistance. It is argued that, just as in archaic agriculture the subject was produced under the moral imperatives of the mos maiorum (ancestral customs), Rural Education, with its conceptions and practices, also exerts mechanisms of constitution over contemporary subjects. The analysis focuses on how these “pedagogical devices” transform the experience and the subject’s relationship with themselves.
